i grew up in a small town in South Lincs. quite mundane, though some nice 2nd hand shops and a really fantastic public park to play in. as all of family apart from me are from London, i would visit all the time from the age of 5, so i feel like i semi grew up there too... Remember being at Camden Lock at 5 and looking at one side at the low depth of water when the sluice gates were in action and then looking at the other side only to submerge my face into the water. it freaked me out!

06:What was your parent's dream for you? 
my dad asked if i wanted to take over the bike repair shop, but i had to say no.

06:When do you believe that music took a central position in your life?
when i started dancing to it.

06: Why do we constantly repeat the same mistakes?

 too much daydreaming.

06:How did you end up doing what you do and not something else?

 i had always wanted to travel and play music or take photos, something that keeps me from getting bored. i think you attract an opportunity sometimes when you are feeling determined to do something new or when it meant to be or something... I might be doing something else in few years, who knows.

 snorkeling in the ocean chasing tropical fish,  then after that, go to eat at the local restaurant for the most delicious meal

06. Why do you make music?

Surely there isn’t just one reason why. But one is that I find it to be a form of therapy for myself...and hopefully it can serve this purpose for others listening to my work. Another “reason,” one that is particularly interesting to me, and this is something I came to realize a few years ago, is that I believe I make music (in part) to continue the quest to find out why it is I need to make music, it’s like a loop of some sort. Maybe one day I’ll find out and I’ll start making something else…

06. What is it that makes you constantly create?

Likely the will to stay sane and/or to experience the feeling I get when creating something special (to me), which is a constant search.

06. One injustice you can't accept

Well it’s obviously really hard to pick just one. But I suppose one that is on my mind quite often, and it’s the reason I’ve self-studied world religion for many years now, is the injustice of people hating and hurting others based on their religion. The idea of hating/hurting another being because they believe a different set of abstract concepts than you do…well, it is mad.

06. In which neighborhood did you grow up? Can you describe it to us?

The city of New Orleans. It’s hot, humid, sticky, old (for the U.S.) and odd. For some things it is great, for others it is terrible. It’s like a balancing act living here again (I moved back 3 years ago, after being gone for 16 years).

06. It is our childhood that forms us?

I suppose it varies from person to person. I believe that if we cling to the child that we once were, it will stunt our growth (and I don’t mean physically). That said, I think there is a thread that runs through our entire lives.

06. Tell us of a motive that excites you.

Indefinable patterns.

06. Are you afraid of death?

I go back and forth on that one.

06. Which is the greatest pleasure in your life?

Contentedness.

06. Tell us a phrase that drives you.

06. How much does the environment influence the root we finally take in life.

I can only speak for myself…but yes, I allow it to influence me as much as possible. Though I’ve been known to change my environment when it negatively impacts me (in some way) for too long, or if I’m getting too bored of my current environment I’ll want to move on. My environment has certainly had a big impact on my musical work over the past 5 years or so.

06. What was your parent's dream for you?

I’m not entirely sure. But I’d imagine they wanted me to do something where I gave 100%+ and could enjoy it while doing so. And I’ve done that my whole life, more or less.

06. What is, in your opinion, the biggest problem of the human kind.

Not being kind.

06. What puts you down?

Bad vibes.

06. What do you believe about the current economic crisis

The ”economy” is just another man-made abstract idea used to control…and it’s doing a job of that right now I ‘d say.

06. Do you have order and program or a kind of discipline in your life? Is this due to your mother or your father?

I do. I need structure in my life; though it cannot be too rigid…a semi-loose structure is best for me. I don’t believe I learned this from my parents, I think I created this “need” on my own.

06. What time do you usually wake up in the morning?

Between 6:30am-8am, depending on the day of the week.

06. Do you think that you can critique negatively the work of your friends?

Maybe this is what you are trying to say and it just is lost in translation…but I would give “constructive criticism” to a friend, if they asked this from me.

06. Do you think you can gain something from receiving negative criticism?

Again, if it were “constructive criticism,” then yes, I could gain something at times, which would be dependent on what the subject was (i.e. piece of music).

06. When do you believe that music took a central position in your life?

Probably in 1997; this was about the time when I stopped skateboarding professionally and my first band recorded an EP and went on tour.

06. Titles. How do they come up?

To categorize perhaps? Categorization can be quite helpful. Like “Poison Mushrooms” for instance, we know not to eat those (or they can kill us) because they’ve been given the title “Poison.” So to create separation I suppose, for better or worse.

06. Do you have the tendency to work many hours without a break?

If life that day permits and the process is flowing, then I’ll work as long as possible. Though inevitably the dog will need to be walked at some point :)

06. What does your family say really about your music?

They’re stoked that I do it, that’s for sure. As far as if they actually like it…well I think it varies from piece-to-piece (of music) and from family member to family member.

06. From the many ideas that might be there in your mind, with what criteria do you pick the one the you will finally realize?

If you are speaking of musical ideas, then they go through several stages of “natural selection.” First they’ll reside in my mind for a while, I let them stay there for some time (a “gestation period” if you will) to see if they are still appealing to me after a while. If they are, then there’s the question of “is this piece/project/etc feasible right now (financially, logistically, etc)” or “how will the idea be applied or carried out.”

The latter happened to me just recently, where I recorded some source material for a general idea of a piece, which I wasn’t exactly sure how it would be constructed (organizationally and technically). But I knew some way to realize the piece would eventually reveal itself, which it did, almost 3 months after recording the sounds. So having patience is part of my process, I work slowly so as to allow such things to work themselves out, instead of forcing/corralling them in some way that I think is “right” on one given day.

So if the idea is possible or I’ve figured out (or “it” has figured its own self out) how to realize it, then it’ll go to the experimenting stages, with the actual sound. If I’m pleased with how it sounds then it usually gets recorded, released or performed live (sometimes all three). Very few ideas of mine make it through all of this (to the final “selection”) though.

Scanner interview for 06:00am



06. When was your first live, how was it?

Depends whether professionally or amateur. First amateur live show I was aged 12 and played piano in front of a room full of generously spirited people and I won a Mars Bar chocolate sweet for my performance. Professionally there have been a variety of incarnations from bands until I became Scanner in 1992. First show was magnificent, a benefit with writer Stewart Home for an underground British fanzine.

06. When was your first recording?

I have tapes going back to when I was 10 and 11 when i would record Spiderman TV broadcasts through the speaker of the television set itself. Then I began making collages of school friends voices, school coach trips, walking, domestic life, etc.

06. Had you ever wished that you had invented something massive like the blue jeans?

Not especially. I'm very content with imagining sonic worlds and other possibilities. Each to their own.

06. What is your idea of happiness?

A place of reassurance, trust and devotion, either in a physical location or in another person. Always important to remember that happiness can only come from inside.

06. What time do you usually wake up in the morning?

Between 06.00 to 06.30, always without an alarm clock.

06. What do you like the most when you stay in a good hotel

An efficient and reliable internet connection, and clean freshly crisp bed sheets.

06. Do you read newspapers? Which?

I only buy one newspaper, once a week, the Sunday Observer, mostly for the Arts coverage

06. Do you read the critics that you receive?

Early in my career I followed what critics had to say but since then my interest has declined. I enjoy opinions of others and every now and then they can reveal aspects you would never recognize yourself so sometimes it's of value.

06. What did you learn this year that you did not know before?

That I would definitely live until next year.

06. What is your guilty pleasure in music?

I suppose this is dependent upon what one should feel 'guilty' about but I embrace all music. As such my listening tastes are very varied. 'Guilty' suggests that it would be unacceptable to enjoy Queen or Russian pop group Tatu, but I do :-)

06. Where did you grow up?

In Southfields, in South London.

06. What do you consider to be your greatest success?

The fact that I make work that is largely invisible, that most people have never heard of or experienced, that is often very exploratory and unusual, but never ceases and I live perfectly comfortably from it.

06. Have you ever lost your interest in music?

Never, it's a passionate love affair that never declines.

06. Do you remember the first sampling record you ever heard?

Suppose it would be something like John Cage's works such as Credo in Us that use vinyl of others, or short wave radio broadcasts, but in terms of actual sampling it's likely to be something like The Beatles Revolution 9 perhaps.

06. What is your opinion about the current situation in Europe?

That's too complex to sum up in a paragraph but I feel some sorrow for the pitiful situation that many countries and individuals are now in, frequently led into by greedy bankers, corrupt politics and so on.

06. Do you go to the cinema?

Frequently, it's almost my second home.

06. Do you pay much attention to the current events?

I follow events on a general level but don't necessary engage as much as others might. I feel I have an appropriate understanding of what's going on in our world but in no great depth.

06. What do you do for leisure?

I thoroughly enjoy reading, visiting exhibitions, galleries, museums, consuming in shops.

06. Have you ever thought that you were going crazy?

At no point, ever. I remain a balanced rational and emotional person.

06. How did you come to write Warhol Surfaces?

I was invited by German radio to create a new work for them and was at the time interested in how this figure of Warhol was actually manufactured by the artist himself, an early example of someone embracing the possibilities of popular media like television and newspapers and how the very surface itself became as valuable, if not more than what was inside the person.

Ξεκιναω να γραφω γιατι θυμαμαι δυο τρια πραγματα που ηθελα να γραψω μερες τωρα.
Ας γραψω πρωτα αυτο που μου ηρθε τωρα για να μην το ξεχασω. Διαβαζω εδω και αρκετο καιρο τουιτς ασχετων και προσπαθω να καταλαβω ποια ειναι η βασικη σκεψη πισω απο ολες τις σκεψεις τους. Μπαινω σε τουιτερ αμερικανων, ευρωπαιων, ελληνων και προσπαθω να πιασω το νοημα πισω απο το καθε τουιτ ξεχωριστα και μετα ολων μαζι και γενικα προσπαθω να καταλαβω τι λενε. Ενα συμπερασμα που μπορω να βγαλω ειναι οτι καθε ενα τουιτ ειναι ισο με την φραση "αν μια πεταλουδα κουνησει τα φτερα της στον αμαζονιο¨. Η παραδοσιακη συνεχεια της φρασης που ειναι "μπορει να φερει βροχη στην κινα" ισοδυναμει με το νοημα του τουιτ το οποιο πρεπει να συμπληρωσει το μυαλο μου. 

Τελευταια μαλλον κατι πρεπει να εχουν παθει τα ματια μου γιατι προσθετουν στις επιφανειες κατι βελουτε, ειδικα σε αυτες που φωτιζονται και δημιουργειται  εντονο κοντραστ. Ειναι σα να βλεπω τα παντα με μασκα καταδυσεων, μα ειδικα το ανθρωπινο δερμα, ειναι οπως οταν το βλεπω κατω απο το νερο σε φωτεινο σημειο που εχει μια θολη φλουδα ασπρου και φαινεται στεγνο.

Ο Αριελ μου ειπε οτι πρεπει να δοκιμασω να γραψω φαντασια γιατι πιστευει οτι θα ημουν καλη αλλα εγω δεν το νομιζω. Μας φτανει ο Σταυρος. 

Καθε πρωι με ξυπνανε τα χελιδονια εδω απ εξω που εχουν τη φωλαρα τους και ειναι τεσσερα πεντε και στριγγλιζουν απο πολυ νωρις και πηγαινοερχονται με θρασος και κανουν σα σφυριχτρες διαιτητη μαλακα. Θα πρεπει να τις ηχογραφησω αλλα συγκεκριμενα θα πρεπει να ηχογραφησω τους αναστεναγμους τους αργα το βραδυ γιατι ειναι μαλλον οτι πιο γλυκο εχω ακουσει. Να προσπαθησω να το αποτυπωσω εδω αν και δε θα εχει καμια σχεση με αυτο που ειναι. Αρχικα να πω οτι βγαινει ενας αναστεναγμος ή δυο το πολυ μεσα στο βραδυ και ειναι συντομοι, σαν δυνατες εκπνοες. το στιψιμο του κιτρινου κλασσικου βετεξ οταν ειναι ακομα καινουριο και εχει απορροφησει το πρωτο νερο γιατι ειναι σα να στροβιλιζεται κατι, ή σα να ξεβιδωνεται κατι αφρατο και γαργαρο. Σα να προσπαθω να σφυριξω με τη γλωσσα στον ουρανισκο αλλα ο ηχος να βγαινει απο τη μυτη. Καλα με τιποτα δεν μπορω να το περιγραψω αυτο, καλυτερα να συνεχισω με τα υπολοιπα που ηθελα να πω. Να γραψω απλα οτι ειναι κι αυτο ενα στριφογυριστο στρογγυλο φρρρτ ρε γαμωτο και ειναι ενρινο και ειναι γλυκο γιατι κοιμαται διπλα μας οταν κοιμασαι κι εγω προσπαθω να κοιμηθω. 

Απο τη συνεντευξη του neil young στο uncut θελω να σημειωσω οτι οταν τον ρωτησε ενας η μια ραδιοφωνικη παραγωγος πώς προεκυψε η διασκευη του god save the queen των sex pistols στον καινουριο του δισκο εκεινος απαντησε who are the sex pistols? και στον τυπο απο το υncυt ειπε οτι δεν κανει διασκευες. Και μετα θα πρεπει να αντιγραψω αυτο το πραμα που ειπε σε σχεση με τον τροπο που δουλευει. Ειπε οτι η μουσα του ειναι το αφεντικο του. Οτι οταν εχει μια ιδεα για ενα τραγουδι ειναι προτεραιοτητα να κατσει να το γραψει γιατι αλλιως πώς θα δειξει σεβασμο και αξια στην ιδεα του. Οτι ακολουθει μια ιδεα οπου τον οδηγει γιατι δεν υπαρχει τιποτα αλλο να κανει, και οτι για αυτο ειναι τυχερος. --- να αντιγραψω απο το uncut. Μου αρεσε οπως το ειπε αυτο ακριβως, δεν εχει νοημα να το μεταφραζω εδωπερα.

Ιδεα για σχεδιο με φρασεις:
